This is the second “paper” on the recent smear campaign against 2008 Presidential candidate Ron Paul. To see the other papers please visit the main page.
These smears are formed by taking quotes out of newsletters, which were published, but not written, by Ron Paul from 1978 to 1995.
The slander:
“I miss the closet. Homosexuals, not to speak of the rest of society, were far better off when social pressure forced them to hide their activities.”
This quote can be found in this newsletter.
The Facts:
When taken out of it’s proper context you would think the writer is saying that he detests the gay lifestyle so much that he believes that society would be better off with gays remaining in the closet. That they should be hidden from view because they are second class citizens. This is the intended purpose of the slanderer, to make it seem to be something it is not.
The complete quote shows something quite different:
“I miss the closet. Homosexuals, not to speak of the rest of society, were far better off when social pressure forced them to hide their activities. They could also not be as promiscuous. Is it any coincidence that the AIDS epidemic developed after they came “out of the closet,” and started hyper-promiscuous sodomy? I don’t believe so, medically or morally.”
First you will notice that within the actual quote used by the slanderer they leave in the partial sentence - “not to speak of the rest of society”. That should be a tip off that the writer was not saying that society would be better off if homosexuals were still in the closet, but rather, the homosexual community would have been better off. There’s a huge difference between the two when trying to claim the writer as being homophobic.
Where the writer states “Is it any coincidence that the AIDS epidemic developed after they came ‘out of the closet,’ and started hyper-promiscuous sodomy? I don’t believe so, medically or morally.” it becomes obvious he was saying that the AIDS epidemic was made worse by the increase of promiscuous homosexual activity after they started coming out en masse. This is a fact I doubt many would disagree with.
While it’s obvious the writer finds the act of homosexuality as being immoral you can not say that it is a homophobic stand. To say that someone is homophobic because they think homosexuality is immoral is the equivalent to saying that you are unAmerican for saying you find unconstitutional and undeclared war immoral. Morals are subjective and can’t be judged to be any better or worse than the next persons, it’s just a disagreement that can’t be taken further until it is placed into an objective argument. To say someone is homophobic because of their morals is a preposterous position to have and doesn’t have any basis on reality.
So in the end, the writer shows he is not homophobic yet still disagrees with the lifestyle. I would wager that that is a position most Americans agree with. Therefore this use of the quote is shown to be nothing more than a futile attempt at slander and in reality is a lie.
If I find more information on this quote I will update this paper and post the changes to the main page here.
