Fred Thompson Whipping Up Interventionism

Fred Thompson seems to be trying to scare up some more of that good old fashion neo-con interventionism against Venezuelan Dictator Hugo Chavez.

In a recent article Freddie Thompson says:

“Venezuelans say that Chavez spent hours a day on the phone with Castro. Additionally, Castro sent thousands of his Communist apparatchiks to help transition Venezuela from a free county to a totalitarian state.”

An obvious attempt to say that Cuba is helping Chavez to bring ruin to his country. Knowing Freddie’s hatred for all things Castro it’s easy to understand why he would include Cuba.

Freddie goes on:

“The Venezuelan and Cuban axis of influence operates openly in Bolivia, Ecuador and Nicaragua. They meddled in America’s free trade negotiations with Costa Rica and support anti-American candidates and movements all over Latin America. Chavez proved and he still believes that democracies can and should be overthrown by force when he led an unsuccessful coup attempt against the democratic Venezuelan government in 1992. After his pardon, he lived in Cuba for two years.”

Now he uses the typical tactic of the warmongering neo-cons to convey a message that would bring memories of the 3rd Reich by saying “axis of influence”. It is a reminder of Bush’s use of the term “axis of evil” to describe Iraq, Iran and North Korea. And it’s purely a scare tactic to try to drum support for Bush’s, and the CFR’s, possible interventist policies in Venezuela. And by referencing influence Chavez may have in other countries he is attempting to bring images of a dictator run amok, and that someday we may need to get invloved in Velenzuela’s internal affairs.

This dangerous man then goes on:

“Today, he’s building up Venezuela’s military strength rapidly — claiming it’s to prevent a U.S. invasion. Perhaps the biggest reason for concern is that Chavez has formed strong bonds with Iranian President Ahmadinejad.”

Sounds very similar to Iraq’s supposed build up of their army as one reason Bush wanted to go into Iraq quickly. Then, by tying Chevaz to Iran’s leadership he’s trying to give the impression that Venezuela is just as dangerous as the neo-cons claim Iran to be.

The warmonger continues:

“In this new era, you can’t detect missile technologies with U-2 over-flights — as did the Kennedy administration. No one seriously doubts, though, that Chavez would love to get his hands on nuclear weapons. We should also remember that Cuba sold Iran the means with which to develop biological weapons. Recall that the main suspect in the recent JFK Airport terrorism plot was arrested on his way to Caracas to get an Iranian passport.

America is facing a growing threat from Latin American totalitarianism and we need to call on those who are most familiar with it to lead the resistance. And the least we can do is free Radio and TV Marti and let them fight for freedom in the realm of ideas.”

Now he comes in for “the kill” by stating that Chavez is trying to acquire nuclear and biological weapons. And by referencing the so-called terrorist plot on JFK airport, which in all likelihood was a frame-up, he attempts to link Chavez to terrorism. He then states that we should get, or stay, involved in resistance movements within Venezuela, a la the CIA involvement in the overthrow of the Shah of Iran and other fatuity, and we all know where that led us. Right into a “war on terrorism”.

After reading this article one may think that Chavez is a ruthless dictator that Americans need to squash, he may be a dictator but I have yet to read that he is ruthless. There is nothing in this article to say that diplomacy is the best form of dealing with Chavez, or that it should even be considered. Quite the contrary, Thompson is trying to drum up support for more foreign entanglements, interventionism and eventually even more enemies of our Republic.

What we should be doing is having an open dialog with Chavez and learn what makes him tick. Gently persuade him to rethink his attacks on the freedoms of the Venezuelan People through diplomacy. We should seek trade with Venezuela and Cuba. After all we are trading with China, does that make us an evil empire too?

Freddie Thompson is attempting to give out reasons to start sanctions, or even an outright invasion, of Venezuela. His ideas on foreign policy are dangerous to our freedoms and our status on the world stage, which is going to take us decades to repair after over 50 years of failures.

These interventionist ideas might be good for such anti-american organizations as the CFR, of which Fred Thompson is a member, but they are not positions that are good for future peace, or for America. Our involvement in the internal affairs of other countries, such as Iran, Iraq, Israel, Palestine and dozens of others has not brought about peace, trade or friendships. But it has set us up as a country to be reviled, hated and feared, when we should be dealing with others in ways to give us respect. It is past time to rethink our foreign policies and put our warmongering policies behind and reforge relationships based on open discussions and trade without getting involved in the internal affairs of other countries. Things that seem foreign to Fred Thompson.

Fred Thompson has no intention of discussing diplomacy with Venezuela. His only thought is how to meddle into or overthrow a foreign government. Fred Thompson does not deserve to be in Congress, let alone President of the United States.
